What to Expect at Your First Extensions Appointment
Getting extensions for the first time can feel like a big deal — because it is. You’re trusting someone with your hair, your time, and a real financial investment. A little nervousness is completely normal. Here’s exactly what happens at Fluff Extensions Studio so there are zero surprises.
Step 1: The Hair Strategy Session
Every new client at Fluff begins with a Hair Strategy Session. This is a 30-minute, in-person consultation where your stylist gets to know your hair and your goals before any extensions are ordered or installed.
What your stylist will do:
- Assess your natural hair’s density, texture, and overall health
- Examine your scalp and growth patterns
- Discuss your lifestyle — how active you are, how you style your hair, how much maintenance you’re comfortable with
- Recommend a specific extension method (or explain why a particular method isn’t right for your hair)
- Color match — holding swatches against your natural hair to determine the perfect shade blend
- Give you a complete cost estimate including hair, installation, and expected maintenance schedule
What to bring: Come with clean, dry hair — no product, no dry shampoo, no oils. Your stylist needs to see your natural hair texture and color in its true state. If you have inspiration photos, bring those too.
Cost: The consultation is $25 (courtesy hold at booking). This is only charged if you no-show or cancel late. Color matching for new guests is free. Virtual consultations are also available if you want to start the conversation remotely.
The consultation is a two-way conversation. Ask anything — about the method, the maintenance, the cost, what happens if you don’t like them. A good stylist wants you to feel completely confident before moving forward.
Step 2: Hair Ordering
After your consultation, your stylist orders your extensions hair. This is custom — the color, length, weight, and number of pieces are all based on what was determined during your consultation. Depending on the specifics, hair may arrive in a few days to a couple of weeks.
Your stylist may custom-color the extensions before your installation appointment to ensure a perfect match. This is normal and something we do frequently.
Step 3: Installation Day
This is the exciting part. Here’s what to expect:
Arrive with clean, dry hair. No product, freshly washed. If your stylist has specific instructions (like blowing out your hair a certain way), they’ll let you know in advance.
Time in the chair varies by method:
- Butterfly wefts: 45 minutes to 2.5 hours
- Hand-tied wefts: 1.5 to 5 hours depending on rows
- Tape-ins: 1.5 to 3 hours
- K-tip fusion: 2+ hours
- I-tip microbeads: 45 minutes for up to 25 tips
- Mesh integration: approximately 3 hours
Does it hurt? Installation shouldn’t be painful. You may feel mild pressure or tugging during the process, but nothing that should cause discomfort. Hand-tied weft clients sometimes feel slight tenderness from the beads for the first night or two — similar to the feeling of wearing a tight ponytail. This fades quickly. If anything feels genuinely uncomfortable during or after installation, tell your stylist immediately.
The finishing touches: After installation, your stylist will cut, blend, and style the extensions into your natural hair. This is where the magic happens — the extensions go from “newly installed” to “that’s your real hair, right?” Your stylist may trim the extensions significantly to create seamless layering and movement. Don’t be alarmed — this is intentional and necessary for a natural result.
Step 4: Your Aftercare Walkthrough
Before you leave, your stylist will walk you through everything you need to know about caring for your extensions at home. This includes:
- How to wash (technique, frequency, and products)
- How to brush (the right brush, the right direction, how often)
- How to sleep (braiding, silk pillowcase recommendations)
- What products to use and which to avoid
- Heat styling guidelines
- When your next maintenance appointment should be
We also have a comprehensive written aftercare guide you can reference at home anytime.
The First Few Days
Here’s what’s normal in the first 48-72 hours after installation:
A period of adjustment. Your head may feel slightly different — heavier, more full, or just “different.” This is normal and your brain adjusts within a few days. Most clients report forgetting they have extensions within a week.
Resist the urge to touch constantly. We know — they’re new and exciting and you want to feel the bonds. But excessive touching and pulling can loosen fresh attachments. Look, don’t touch.
Wait 48 hours to wash. This gives adhesive bonds time to fully cure and bead placements time to settle. Plan your installation day accordingly (don’t schedule it right before a sweaty event).
Minor shedding is normal. Losing a few strands from the wefts in the first few days is typical — similar to normal shedding from your own hair. Significant shedding, however, is not normal and should prompt a call to your stylist.
What If You Have Questions After?
Our team doesn’t disappear after your appointment. If something feels off, if you’re unsure about a product, or if you just want reassurance that what you’re experiencing is normal — reach out. A quick text, call, or email to your stylist is always welcome. We’d much rather answer a question early than troubleshoot a problem later.
