Hair Extensions 101: Every Method Explained
Choosing hair extensions can feel overwhelming. There are more methods available today than ever before, each with different attachment techniques, maintenance schedules, price points, and ideal hair types. The wrong method for your hair can lead to damage, frustration, and wasted money. The right one can be genuinely life-changing.
At Fluff Extensions Studio in Denver’s LoDo neighborhood, our certified specialists work with eight distinct extension methods. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach — we believe in matching the method to the person. Here’s everything you need to know about each one.
Hand-Tied Weft Extensions
Hand-tied wefts are the most popular professional extension method in Denver right now, and for good reason. A hand-tied weft is a thin, flexible strip of hair that’s been sewn by hand rather than by machine, making it lighter and flatter than traditional wefts.
How it works: Small silicone-lined beads are placed along a horizontal row near your scalp. The weft is threaded through the beads and secured with a locking stitch. Your natural hair falls over the top, completely concealing the attachment point.
Best for: Medium to thick hair that needs volume, length, or both. Hand-tied wefts distribute weight evenly and create the most natural movement.
Maintenance: Move-up appointments every 8-10 weeks. Hair lasts 9-12 months with proper care.
What you should know: Hand-tied wefts require a certain amount of natural hair density to conceal the beads. If your hair is very fine or thin, a different method may be more appropriate — which is why we always start with a consultation.
Butterfly Weft Extensions
Butterfly wefts are the newest method in our studio and one of the most exciting developments in extensions technology. They feature an ultra-thin polyurethane (PU) base with pre-made holes that allow for rapid bead installation without any sewing.
How it works: Your stylist threads tiny microbeads through precision-placed holes in the PU base and clamps them onto small sections of your natural hair. No needle, no thread. The base lies completely flat against your scalp.
Best for: Fine to medium density hair, clients who want the fastest possible installation, or anyone who found traditional wefts too bulky. Installation takes roughly 20 minutes per row.
Maintenance: Every 4-6 weeks. Hair lasts 6-9 months and can be reinstalled multiple times.
What you should know: Because butterfly wefts are so lightweight, they put less tension on your natural hair than most other methods. We were among the first studios in Denver to certify in this method. Read our full butterfly weft deep-dive here.
Forever Tape-In Extensions
If you love the idea of tape-in extensions but want something more seamless, Forever Tape-Ins are the hybrid answer. Instead of 20-40 individual tape sandwiches placed around your head, Forever Tape-Ins use single, continuous wefts that flow from one or two points of contact.
How it works: A continuous, flexible weft with medical-grade adhesive is applied to a horizontal section of your natural hair. Weight is distributed across a wider area than traditional tape-ins, reducing tension on individual strands.
Best for: All hair types. Particularly great for clients who want the convenience of tape-ins with the seamless look of hand-tied wefts.
Maintenance: Every 6-8 weeks. Wefts are removed, cleaned, re-taped, and reinstalled. Hair lasts 6-12 months.
Traditional Tape-In Extensions
Tape-ins remain one of the most popular methods nationally for their ease of application and relatively low maintenance. Thin, pre-taped wefts are sandwiched around sections of your natural hair using medical-grade adhesive.
How it works: Two adhesive strips are placed on either side of a small section of your hair, creating a “sandwich.” The bond is flat and lightweight.
Best for: Medium to thick hair. Tape-ins work well for clients who want a reliable, proven method without committing to a longer installation time.
Maintenance: Every 4-6 weeks for re-taping. Hair lasts 3-6 months and can typically be re-taped 2-3 times.
What you should know: Oil-based products can break down the adhesive, so your aftercare routine matters. Our stylists will walk you through exactly which products to use (and which to avoid). See our complete aftercare guide.
K-Tip Keratin Fusion Extensions
K-tips are the gold standard for semi-permanent, strand-by-strand extensions. Each individual strand is tipped with a small keratin bond that’s fused to your natural hair using a controlled heat tool.
How it works: The keratin tip (which mimics the protein already in your hair) is heated and pressed around a small section of your natural strands, creating a tiny, flexible bond at the root.
Best for: All hair types. K-tips offer the most precise placement of any method, making them ideal for adding targeted volume, length, or even color without dyeing.
Maintenance: K-tips last 3-6 months before needing removal and reinstallation. They require the least frequent maintenance visits of any method.
What you should know: Installation takes longer than weft methods (we typically allow 2+ hours for a significant number of strands), but the payoff is the most natural movement and versatility — you can wear your hair up, down, and in any style without detection.
I-Tip Microbead Extensions
I-tips are the heat-free cousin of K-tips. Instead of a keratin bond, each strand is tipped with a small cylinder that slides into a tiny silicone-lined microbead clamped at the root.
How it works: A microbead is threaded onto a small section of your natural hair. The I-tip strand is inserted into the bead, and your stylist clamps it securely. No heat, no adhesive, no chemicals.
Best for: Fine to medium hair, or anyone who wants strand-by-strand results without any heat application. I-tips are one of the gentlest methods available.
Maintenance: Move-up every 6-8 weeks. Hair can last 6-12 months.
Mesh Integration
This is the method that changes lives. Mesh integration is a non-surgical hair replacement solution designed specifically for women experiencing thinning hair, hair loss, or conditions like alopecia.
How it works: A lightweight, breathable mesh is custom-fitted over thinning areas of your scalp. Your natural hair is gently pulled through the mesh, then extensions are sewn onto it — blending seamlessly with your own hair for an invisible, undetectable result.
Best for: Women with thinning hair, alopecia, or hair that’s too fragile for traditional extension methods. If you’ve been told your hair is “too thin for extensions,” mesh integration may be the answer.
Maintenance: Every 4-8 weeks. The system can last 6-12 months with proper care.
What you should know: This is a deeply personal service. Our certified mesh integration specialists approach every appointment with sensitivity and care. Read more about extensions for hair loss.
How to Choose the Right Method
The honest answer is: let a professional help you decide. Your hair type, density, scalp health, lifestyle, styling habits, and budget all factor into the recommendation. What works beautifully on your friend may not be the best choice for your hair.
That’s why every new client at Fluff starts with a Hair Strategy Session — a $25 consultation (courtesy hold only, charged only for no-shows) where your stylist assesses your hair in person and recommends the ideal method, placement, and color match.
